AN IMAGE PRE-ANGKOR OF THE GODESS DURGA

Cambodia
Phnom-Da
9th Century
Grey Hard Stone

This image celebrates the goddess Durga's victory over the demon-buffalo Mahishasura. Durga is clothed in a tall cylindrical miter and a long clinging Sampot with a gracefully looped and knotted fold. This image ever had a supporting arch the solid stone between her ankles would have provided sufficient stability. This image depicts none of the violence of the goddess's defeat of the demon, frequently portrayed in other cultures.
