A FIGURE OF A FEMALE DEITY BAPHUON

Cambodia
Baphuon
11th Century
Polish Hard Stone

This divinity is probably Uma, standing in Samabhanga, both arms are broken. Carved in standing posture, wearing a long vertically pleated sampot, the wavering sash with fishtail terminal, the hips encircled by a belt decorated with double row of ovals, the faintly smiling face with slender eyes, the hair arranged in vertical plaits with chignon encircled by a roper work band, a flower-head on the top, the whole of the patina with intermittent areas of black and brown speckling. The style of this sculpture suggest a Baphuon period, the surface with a smooth finish polished. (Small restoration to the shoulder and to the back.)
